Wine tasting with foodies at Prime Grill & Butchery

So....it is Friday evening...we were invited to go to a wine tasting with a 4 course dinner at Prime Grill & Butchery in Fourways.....i was excited...cause i like these type of pairings....

On arrival we received a glass of Sauvignon Blanc....it was quite light and not too bad...but I am not the best judge on white wine cause I do prefer red wine....but it was not bad....and i must say, they were generous in the quantity one received and they would even top up if you wanted more.....

Once we entered the private room, tucked away at the back of the restaurant, however, fully surrounded by glass, there was a table of 20 people. The menu lay on each place setting and looked as follows:

Menu for the night
As you can see...the wine maker was Meinert....the owner himself was present and he gave a speech once everyone was seated. He explained a little bit about where the wine farm is situated, Stellenbosh, about what wines they produce- mainly red wine and why they produce one white wine- because his wife only drinks Sauvignon Blanc....he explained the first three wines on the menu and then the tasting of the wine and food started. In my opinion, his talk was rather lengthy (30min) And he said that he kept it short...wow...what would the normal have been....hahaha....first course beef carpaccio paired with a blend....the carpaccio was very nice....beautifully presented and tasty...the wine...not bad at all...it was smooth and i honestly enjoyed it....let me share a pic....
Beef carpaccio
Next up was the salad with the duck breast....the wine was a Merlot....foodies was quite good...for me the duck could have been a bit more pink, the dressing was delicious and the salad very fresh....the wine...was ok...not my favourite but not too bad.....let me share a pic....

After the two courses Martin spoke again...this time it was not too long...so that was good. The third wine, he exlained, is their flagship wine..blend of four grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, Cabernet Franco and Merlot.....and the last wine is a dessert wine, so it would be a sweet wine...he explained that it is like an "Eiswein" in Europe which Mutti exlained to me is done when there is the first frost on the grapes, the grapes are almost brown already, because they are so ripe, hence so sweet.....
So next up, the flagship wine with the prime rib and mushrooms with a balsamic glaze....the presentation for me was not great...there was some colour missing...the meat was very tasty though...mine had a bit too much fat and when i compared to the others i had the most....the mushrooms with the balsamic glaze was very nice...the wine...for me it was a little rough in the throat....so for me...too much of a big deal is being made about this wine...the best was still the first red blend....now time to share a pic...
Prime rib
Last course...dessert...apple crumble with almond ice cream and a lemon creme brullee....the lemon creme brullee i did not like...for me too sweet...the rest seemed to disagree with me...they loved it....the apple crumble...jst wow wow wow...i loved ...the ice cream did not really taste like almonds more like vanilla...but it did not matter..it complemented the apple crumble beautifully...really delicious and perfect size. Also the dessert wine was amazing...Mutti loves sweet wine and she also thought this one was amazing....so good ending to a food and wine pairing.....let me share a dessert pic....

All in all a nice evening...good food and decent wine....goodnite from me...next blog..let's see what inspiration i find....cheers
