Livorno

Short.....and sweet. As you might know...once every 10 weeks Kim and I do one motorcycle tour....this time it would be Corsica. Our ferry would depart at 8am from Livorno, boarding latest 6:30 hence we decided to go to Livorno the night before and do an overnight. We arrived quite late in Livorno because we decided to take the scenic drive there via Volterra (where we also stopped for a cappuccino and a gelato). The gelato we bought at a place called Chic & Shock.....the flavours we tried were fig and pannacotta (it was great because we were allowed to try before ordering). The ice cream was absoloutely delicious, we loved it. There were so many flavours to choose from, we really struggled. After that, time for a cappuccino at another venue. I am sorry, but i do not remember the name. However, it was a rather good cappuccino, price, we realised it was a touristy area, but i guess it is Volterra. Anyway, kim and i enjoyed our snack before leaving for Livorno.

Once we arrived at our overnight place, we literally dropped our bags, had a quick shower and then went into Livorno. We did not really feel like exploring but rather thought we wanted a nice start to the evening and what better way than an aperitifo. We chose a small place called Caffe Duomo. The reason we chose it, quite simple, there were some people already enjoying aperitifo and their snacks looked amazing. Kim ordered a beer and i ordered a glass of prosecco.....it was amazing the little snacks....loved it, but again, the price was accordingly. We paid €6 for each drink....anyway, we enjoyed it. Let me share some pics...

After that we did some googling research on where we should eat. Of course we had researched the specilities of Livorno and there were a few things that were on top of our list. We ended up choosing a place that looked like a local spot, a little bit outside of all the main touristy area. The name was Cantina Senese. I loved all the decor inside....it just felt so local and welcoming, let me share some pics...

Chianti bottles with plastic i have never seen before, in all honesty i do not like them much, i guess it is cheaper that way, but then i would rather have a Chianti in a normal bottle, not a "plastic" wrapped bottle, interesting concept though. So, time to order some food, for starters we decided to share the raw anchovies marinated in vinegar and lemon juice (Acciughe alla povera), they were really yummie....loved it. Let me share a pic.

Our next course was the famous Livorno fish soup called Cacciucco. It was very different from what i know as being a soup....normally there is a lot of liquid and not so much fish.....this one reminded me of the Amalfi soup.....lots of fish and not a lot of liquid...in fact it was very clever, they put a huge slice of bread at the bottom of the fish soup plate, then they put all seafood with soup on top and of course all the liquid is absorbed by the bread....which makes the bread soggy and so yummie, man it was soooo good, we really loved it. Time to share a pic....

After that...time for the deep fried anchovies.....and they were as good as the raw ones....of course very different....but i could not tell you what i prefered, it simply depends what you feel like....but if i could only have one, then i would choose the deep fried ones. Let me share a pic....

After that....we were full....we thought it was a good idea to make our way to our overnight cause tomorrow morning we have to get up 5:30 as we need to leave 6 in order to get to the ferry....so cheers from me...next blog will be from Corsica....im so excited to go....i have no expectations, just excitment.
