Pienza and Monticchiello

So....one day....we decided on a day trip down from Chianti to Montepulciano....well to be exact we wanted to visit Pienza and Monticchiello and we would just drive past the famous church in Montepulciano, San Biagio...its a true beauty, its outside the old walls, just underneath but it is stunning.....have a look at this....

San Biagio

We did not go inside.....we thoughT we could leave something for next time....so we made our way to monticchiello....however, we made our way there on the dust road not the main road, well actually it is the scenic route and hence we chose it, the views along the way were beautiful.....let me share some pics....

Driving the scenic route
On the way from Montepulciano to Monticchiello
Arrival in Monticchiello we parked right outside the historic centre. It was truely beautiful, but so are most old tuscan towns/ villages, there is just so much history and character, truely just wow....there were not many restaurantS, just three near the entrance....of course we wanted delicious food so we stopped at the one where we were able to sit outside...first before i tell you about the food, let me share some pics of the old town....
Old town
Kim and me in Monticchiello
As mentioned before.....we had lunch at the restaurant where we managed to sit outside......they had a menu for some cold food and then they had a small hand written menu for the hot meals....one special was the cinghale stew (wildboar stew), so of course Kim thought he would try that, mom, dad and me decided to share a cold meat and cheese platter and a buffalo mozzarella caprese.....the food was extremely delicious.....somehow cause we were all so hungry, pics were forgotten....so this time you just have to believe me that the lunch was yummie. Dad loved the cinghale also so much that the two men decided to or a second portions, it was just so tender and the sauce was so good.
Afterwards time for a stroll in Pienza, also a very old small village, very picturesque. Monticchiello lies between Pienza and Montepulciano. We strolled around a little, found a very cool little local shop....check out these cheeses.....And then we also decided to buY a 3l Chianti bottle in one of the traditional bottles....so beautiful.
Local Tuscan food
We did not stay too long in Pienza cause guess what...it started to drizzle and then the drizzle turned into rain....and you know what, we were not in the mood for that, so we thought it was time to head to the car and head back to our place.....
Now of course i have not told you why our stay got extended from 1 week.....well here is the story....we were meant to leave on a Friday and on Wednesday morning I had signs of pre-term labour, nothing to joke about, so i wanted to go see a gynecologist. The village where we were staying only had a normal dr, so the dr wanted me to get into the ambulance and drive to the hospital. Kim and i were a little confused about why we needed to go with an ambulance so we were told that way the dr would see us immediately, if we go in private car then we would have to stay in a long line, could take many hours for the dr to see me, so off we went with the ambulance.
Once we arrived there they examined me and told me that i needed to stay one night at the hospital cause there was a good chance i might go into labour and they did not want that cause i was only 34 weeks and 4 days. They give me steroids to mature the baby's lungs and i got bed rest....hence they said to me they will NOT allow me to fly home on Friday......when they released me the next day they said i need to come back the following week Thursday and then a decision would be made whether i fly home or whether i would have to stay in Italy.......so hence we were stuck in Italy for longer than we expected......hmmmmm.....i really wanted to go home cause all the baby's things that we have bought are there...and i like my dr there.....
Anyway....montepulciano, monticchiello and pienza are definitely worth a visit....truely beautiful and of course the wine is famous there.....and dellicious, yes, i am pregnant, but i am allowed to try a sip......
So from me...im off to have some aperitifo
