Meersburg und Randolfzell

So....this will be my last blog on Germany.....i will combine Meersburg and Radolfzell cause they are both quite small...but beautiful in their own way.....Meersburg is beautifully positioned at the edge of the Bodensee, And literally means castle on the sea, burg meaning castle, hence there is a castle. We arrived there after lunch....why after lunch, cause i started getting so hungry on the way there that i said to kim i need to stop for sausage....but what i really wanted was the imbiss sausage, meaning not in a restaurant but somewhere on the side of the road....Kim thought i was being a little impossible, but he played along and we hoped and somehow......we managed...it was this little "shack" serving different sausages...exactly what i wanted...the choice...white bratwurst, red bratwurst or currywurst (which can be either red or white, it just has a curry sauce over it). Germany is famous for those...so red bratwurst, currywurst it was.....have a look at the place and the meal......delicious....

Meersburg is a pretty little village....we walked around a little...had a cappuccino and then decided to visit the Burg. One thing i have to say about German people they LOVE their ice cream coups and their cakes in the afternoon....unbelievable...everyone sitting at cafes in the afternoon from 2 onewards and everyone having huge coups of ice cream with Sahne (cream) in front of them...unbelievable.....anyway....it is just something we noticed while visiting all the different little areas in Germany...and my Oma is no exception to the rule...always needs to have a cake in the afternoon....unreal.....

Anyway...back to the visit of the Burg. Apparently, Meersburg is the oldest castle in Germany, it was built in 630 by the Merovingian king Dagobert I. Kim and i decided to visit the inside....we got a small guide booklet which explained each of the rooms to us...that was actually quite nice....short and sweet explanations. The rooms still had some old furniture in them, of course not from when it was built, but in fact this castle was inhabitated for long and the famous poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff lived there for eight years. She also died in this castle, and you can even see the room where she died.....it was very beautiful to walk through this castle and see...it is very well preserved. Now let me share some pics.....

So it is well worth a visit, not a cheap visit to get in, but it was worth to see it once.
Now a little bit about Radolfzell. Radolfzell is quite a big village, actually i think it is considered a town....the church is beautiful and there are so many restaurants to eat at...we really enjoyed it. We went out quite a few times for eating cause Oma does not cook and she just wanted to take us out. One night we cooked at home, mom and i insisted that we wanted white asparagus with hollondaise sauce and Schwarzwaelder Schinken. Kim thought this was rather wierd, how could mom and i get so excited about white asparagus....and guess who became a major fan.....and guess who insisted on going to a rEstaurant, our last night, that served white asapargus....yes, Kim.....but they are so damn good, and they are seasonal....So when in season, one has to make the most of them....also starwberries were in season while there...their taste...undescribable, so much taste and so fantastic...every morning we wanted to eat fresh strawberries....
There is a little stall in Radolfzell, and the lady is only selling strawberries and white asapargus, if not in season, she is not there...she sells every day and stops selling when she runs out...so guess who went there always looking for strawberries.....divine.....now let me share some pics of Radolfzell and of some of the yummie foodies.....

Zanderfillet (fish) with white asapargus

The above food pic is from the last evening when Oma took us to Strandcafe Mettnau, and that in fact was delicious, it was our favourite restaurant of the week. Oma insisted that we go there and she was right, it was great, kim had his white asparagus, salted, boiled potatoes and veal, mom had her white asaparagus with Zanderfillet and I had my salad plate with Zanderfillet....yummie, oma had only white asapargus.

One lunch we went to the Yachtclub, the food was good, but nothing special. We ate their with my moms cousin Sylvia and her husband. I tried quite a few various fishes while we were in Germany, fishes of course from Lake Bodensee, or the english name for it Lake Constance. Felchenfillet, Zanderlie, kritzerli, i liked them all. The first day we at at il postino, kim had schnitzel and chips and i tried the zanderfillet, i would say out of all the restaurants we tried while we were there that was the least best, but not too bad. The Kritzerli i had were not the famous ones from Switzerland which are small and crispy deep fried, they ar the larger variety, but still good and crispy.

Eva, my moms cousin from Germany with her boyfriend and kids also took us one evening to a restaurant on the Reichenau Insel. This is a half island on lake Bodensee. It is actually know as the vegetable island, they grow so much of it, and all fresh....so one evening we went to a restaurant there, i honestly do not remember the name, but i decided to order a fitness teller with kritzerli.....fitness plate is basically various salads and then a protein....i love fitness plate and whenever i see it on the menu, i definitely order it...and i definitely was not disappointed.....very yummie...more the salads than the fish, hahaha.....

Now let me share some pics of my oma with you....

Oma, mom and me outside Strandcafe

Kim and me outside Strandcafe, pregnant at almost 33 weeks

We really enjoyed our time exploring Germany a little bit and spending some time with Oma. I also loved eating some real German food, from the sausages to the various fishes from the Bodensee.

I almost forgot....we also tried out the famous ice cream in Radolfzell called Fernando, Oma told me that when it gets warm people stand in line to eat ice cream there, and one warm day we walked past there...and guess what...there was a line, so kim and i werE clever , we went there twice....once when it was raining, and once early in the morning, both times no line...and i guess the answer to the question whether we liked it, you already know, cause if the place is not good....why would one go back there again....so yes....it was very nice ice cream, and so far the cheapest we found....€2 for 2 scoops.....sorry, but i forgot to take a pic.....

So, for now i am done writing....i am off to bed now....i am actually back in Italy while i am writing this....but i will write about that story in my blog to come...next blog Switzerland, specifically Zurich....and then how i got stuck in Italy.....but as i said....for now good nite......
