Messina, Sicily

So..... I think i mentioned when i got my schedule last week i thought i was gonna die... No chances to get off at ports and this at ports which i will NOT see again..... BUT where there is a will there is a way.....

So here is my brief story.....So Messina timetable i had off until lunch, 12, then work until 4 and then work again at 7pm.... 2 big BUT's.... One, we had to be back on ship at 5 AND there was a crew drill at 10 which we are NEVER allowed to miss, roll call..... Also my supervisor informed me crew was NOT allowed to go ashore before a drill...that i thought was pathetic.... Me being desperate to get off in Messina, decided to call head of safety.... And he said, i am allowed to go off as long as im back for the drill.... Perfecto, so at 8am i left the ship and headed into town, i knew where all the sites were, there are not many in Messina itself(as there was def no time for Mt Etna volcano), I saw the clock tower which looks amazing and then i went to the cathedral on the hill to get a good view over Messina.... Great.... And of course i needed to try the coffee, macchiato AND yes foam was good.... I made it back at 945..... Im hearing applause... Thank you. Then i had the drill, ate lunch, finished my first shift and at 4, i ran to my room changed and ran to the nearest ice-cream shop to eat pistaccio ice-cream..... I mean there was just no way i was gonna leave italy without having ice- cream.....and it was well worth it, it had little chunks of pistaccio nuts, these italians do know how to make food....

And now a little backwards..... Yesterday we went for dinner at Papas, the italian Restaurant, this was perfect timing as today was italy. At this speciality restaurant you pay a cover charge of 10 dollars and then you can eat whatever and however much you want.... Honestly it was a bargain.... For starters we got a mezze platter (roasted peppers, white bean & garlic mousse, grilled tomatoes, olives and parma ham) and thick pizza bread.... Then i had a carprese salad, very good and for mains the porcini, spinach & prawn risotto... WOW honestly amazing.... Will go back there, quite a few more times as there are a few more things i wanna try, pancetta and fig salad, capaccio, salmon, saltimboca.... Dessert, i was too full but one of the girls had ricotta cheesecake, i tried... Nothing special, apparently tiramisu is nice....ill try next time.....

Tomorrow sea day then its Dubrovnik.... Really hoping that they allow me to be the escort for the shore excursion....i signed up but normally they only take one or two crew... Ill find out tomorrow.....hold thumbs for me....
