What is the definition of ceviche...i think i might have given you a definition or explanation before....but this blog is dedicated to ceviche....so i thought i might as well explain again...also...some of you might have forgotten...hahaha.....
So, here goes....it is a seafood dish popular in the coastal regions of Latin America. The dish is typically made from fresh raw fish cured in citrusnjuices, such as lemon or lime, and spiced with ajinor chili peppers. Additional seasonings, such as onions, salt, and cilantro, may be added. Ceviche is usually accompanied by a side dish that complements its falvour, such as sweet potato, lettuce, corn, avocado or plantain.
Now...some of you might wonder what plantain is....and actually i was wondering myself, hence i googled...so here is the explanation....a plantain is one of the less weet cultivated varieties of the genus Musa whose fruit is also known as the banana. Plantains are typically eaten cooked, sometimes along with their leaves and fibers, and are usually lareg, angular and starchy, in contrast to common bananas. Plantain are a sraple food in West and Central Africa, Central America and the Caribbean....now i am also going to share a pic with you....
Raw plantains
Ok....enough about facts now..let's move on.....the first ceviche which i have tasted on this run was last contract with Kim in Cozumel...you might remember.....let me share a pic to remind you..
Octopus ceviche in Cozumel served with avocado
As you can see....octopus ceviche...with lime....tomato....onions...cilantro....(some unusual flavouring: paprika) and accompanied by...avocado and also some nacho chips...that one was delicious....so this time when i was out in Belize with Sofia...i decided i definitely needed to try a ceviche there.....and it was similar yet different...but again...truely delicious...let me share a pic first and then the explanation.
Fish ceviche in Belize served with planaition
Plantaition removed to be able to see the fish
Again...the fish ceviche was seasoned with tomatos, onions, limes and cilantro....this time accompanied by plantaition...which in fact i have never had before so i was very curious to taste what looked like a dried banana. I must say, another great ceviche, fresh, tasty and the plantaition was great cause it served like a nacho chip and the ceviche was like the dip...very yummie...and i definitely would oder it again....
Next up....the thrid and kast port on this run, Roatan (Honduras). We went out and spotted this place called Captain Jack's ceviche bar...so guess what...that is where we went....(more about Captain Jack's in another blog). There were a lot of different ceviche...from fish to shrimp to conch to mixed....we decided to go for the conch...and again...it was so yummie....also....done with lime, tomatos, onion and cilantro...also some pepper (nee ingredient) and it was accompanied by yuca aka cassava. I have never eaten that either, some kind of a root...and the chips looked like slived potatoes and fried...did not taste like potato though....but earthy...but not bad at all...in fact very delicious, and again, it really was perfect as it served like a nacho chip....have a look at the ceviche...and also a pic of the yuca....
Yuca
Conch ceviche in Roatan served with yuca
I am sure you all have an opinion of which one i thought was the best...and probably looks wise the ocopus because of the green colour of the avocado and the purple colour of the octopus...but in fact, taste wise, i would chose the last one, the conche one...why cause the side order of the yuca was just so damn good....and i loved it....so yes, this was definitely not the last time we have been to Captain Jack's in Roatan.
Oh..before i forget...some of you might not know what a conch is...here is a pic...
Conch
So...enough about ceviche now...hope you enjoyed...and i am sure this is not the last blog you will see pictures of ceviche...cause i am definitely planning on trying a few more ceviches during our stay on board. So for now...cheers...i am getting hungry and it is time to go and eat some dinner now....cheers.
