Naples

How i love it....what is it...naples or italy...or certain parts of italy...where so far all places i have seen in italy....anyway i guess i am just thinking aloud....anyway...as i mentioned in my last blog i had quite a few plans for naples and i just hoped that they would all come into place...and i can now glady and very happily say...that yes...they are worked out...yay....and i guess it is not just good for me but also good for you..otherwise the blog that i would have written would have been a doressing or maybe a frustrated one...hahaha...anyway...moving on....so in the morning kim's mom and i took the leisurely Sorrento tour...literally the bus would dive us there (little bit og high way and then the coastal windy road to Sorrento) with a guide amd then we would have about 1.5hrs free time and then the bus would take us back...that was perfect cause i had afternoon plans with kim....on the way there we was Herculaneum and Pompeii and the guide gave us some history and also explained a few things about Mount Vesuvius, that it used to have only one peak, now it has two, mount Vesuvius is 1281m high, the crater is 600m wide and 20m deep....there is a lot of vegetation on Mount Vesuvius mainly grapes, cherries and apricots...the wine is called Lacryma Christi...and yes...i did manage to snatch a photo while driving....we also stopped at a view point where we had beautiful views of the Sorrento coast....the cliffs of the Sorrento coast were just amazing..it really reminded me of Capri....beautiful....

Once we arrived in Sorrento they showed us a tradtional wood inlay...beautiful hand-made pieces...after that we strolled the street with the quaint little shops...very narrow...full of lemons...limoncello...lemon soap...limoncello sweets....lemons...lemons and more lemons...then again we were informed this is the land of the lemons...and yes...we did buy some limoncello, choc and almond sweets as they were delicious...1.5hrs passed way too fast and we definitely could have stayed longer...but the good things is...we got a glimpse...and i know that i want to come back.....like i said i want to to the amalfi coast...but now i also want to do the sorrento coast.....

Lemons everywhere...and what size....

In the afternoon it was time for kim and me to finally visit the famous da michele pizzeria...it became famous with the movie eat, prey, love that features Julia Roberts...it is where julia roberts has her pizza when she goes to naples in the movie....the pizzeria only has two types of pizza..margharita and marina (just tomato, no cheese)...and we were warned that we might have to get in line...but guess what...i would stand in line until i have tasted this pizza....i was so excited...almost like a small child...let me give you a little bit of history about the place though....

"In 1870, the Condurro family started what was to become a long tradition of master pizza makers in the center of Naples.

Michele Condurro son of Salvatore, improved the family’s art of preparing the pizza, whose secrets he had learned from the famous masters in Torre Annunziata (district outside city), who were experts in preparing and kneading the dough, as well as baking the pizza.

Michele opened his first pizzeria in 1906, where the current Ascalesi Hospital is and whose construction forced the pizzeria to move. In 1930 the store was transferred to its present location, in Via Cesare Sersale. The historic pizzeria has often been described by experts and journalists as "the Sacred Temple of Pizza".

Since then, five generations of master pizza makers have kept on working as the founder, following the tradition and being faithful to Grandfather Michele’s instructions: "There are only two types of Neapolitan Pizza, the "Marinara" and the "Margherita" and no "junk" should be used in preparing the pizza, because it could only alter its world famous genuineness and taste".

The secret of da Michele’s never-ending success is: using natural ingredients and an old, traditional, time-tested method of leavening the pizza dough." (Direct quote from the website)

The place was rather shabby looking...we received the number 30...and they were calling 15....we started chatting to some people and the guy said to us...earlier on ther were people waiting for 2 hrs to get in...and he said there were lines and lines...now it was quiet....and we were actually damn lucky cause after 30min our number was called...trenta...yay....

Waiting for our number to be called....trenta
Outside da Michele

Once inside, we shared a table with another couple, they were from brazil and were trying to escape the soccer world cup back at home...hahaha....we looked at the menu..which were hanging all around the restaurant and ordered double mozzarella margherita and some acqua frizzante.....

The famous menu
One of three rooms, one table has just become empty, we sat at a table like that with a brazilian couple

Have you noticed something else which is peculiar.....there is beer....but NO WINE....how strange....anyhow...moving on...hahaha....and was it worth the wait...yes...the pizza was amazing...just wow...gooyey and chewy crust...how it should be...soft centre....man...it was so damn good....we were like savages eating that pizza...it was gone in 5 minutes...and no i am not joking...it was so damn good...

Doppia mozzarella

Wow...as i am writing this....it makes me so damn hungry...and it makes me crave another one...pizza in Naples is very different....and i love it...i love the dough....so amazing....after our pozza we slowly made our way back to the ship....of course this included a stop for some cappuccino and pastries....kim chose cannoli and i chose the white sfogliatelle...the cappuccino was good and strong...the pastries were not so good...i was disappointed.....after that...ice cream time...and yes...you guessed right...amarena and pistaccio....and that was yummy....

Ice cream place.....amarena and pistaccio
So all in all....as you might have noticed...i had a very good day...and i achieved what i wanted to....i definitely will come back to Naples....the only question remaining is....when.....but for cheers Naples...i hope to see you soon...cause i know i will miss you....
