Barcelona and its food

This blog is about food....time going out is very restricted for us as we are short-manned and hence breaks are short and hence many times...kim and i end up going for a coffee.....lunch...or just a snack....so yes...that is also what we did in the few Barcelona's we have managed to go out.....so i have combined all our outings into one food blog...enjoy...

Barcelona, of course Blanca had already educated me well with typical dishes...so now it was up to my own research to find some more typical things....so the first thing we spotted while walking on Las Ramblas was a sign that read typical cake from Barcelona...and yes...it looked delicious....1.5 Euros...wow.....and it was divine...a puff pastry type dough, but more gooey, filled with choc spread, like nutella and covered with some sugar....oooh....so good...making me crave it now...here we go...let me show you a pic...

Sweet pastry stuffed with choc spread

Of course when in Barcelona there are two food things you have to do...eat tapas and go to La Boqueria (the fresh produce market)....first of La Boqueria...a taste of the cold meat skewers...just 1 Euro...and so cool....it is a skewer and has 5 different pieces of cold cuts attached to it...great way to taste some Spanish cold meat....the stalls are very cute....and just make you so hungry....so no wonder we ended up tasting some of the goodies sold on sticks and sachets....deep fried fish balls....a small sachet of Spanish sausages...divine...and yes...i did my reserach and arrived at the Market with a piece of paper with the typical Catalan region cheeses....namely:

Queso del alto urgel (softish...divine)

Queso de la garrochoa (hardish...i dont like it)

Mato (they did not have)

Tupi (they did not have)

Tou dels tillers (looks like a camembert...but less flavourful....it is ok)

So....yes....we bought some tou dels tillers and queso del alto urgel and some manchego....and of course some sausages....i was in heaven shopping at the market....and not to forget....the nuts...of course...divine....combination of walnuts, cashewnuts, peanuts, dried cherries, dried cranberries, hazenuts and blanched almonds....and of course the famous ham...iberian or serrano...just delicious..dont you love the traditional method of cutting..held in place by a clasp and then they hand cut thin pieces off ham off in front of you...the 4 hams are all cured for different amout of time....

Visiting Barcelona would not be complete without a stop at this famous place called.....Vincens...they sell types of Turrons....it is a nougat type sweet, typically made from honey, sugar, egg white with nuts....normally shaped round or rectangular...there are hard and soft ones....i like the soft ones...the crema one...turron de yema quemada....so delicious....and turron blando de almendra...and the most widely found....turron duro de almendra....let me show you a picture....

Doesnt your mouth start to drool......yes.....and now...as i said earlier...one definitely has to try a tapas bar...so we went north of plaza catalunya and found a little tapas place...we chose the place cause we spotted a special....8 taster tapas for 14 Euros....hmmm...why not....the 8 tapas were patata brava (roasted potatoes with a reddish sauce), croquettes, deep fried shrimps, manchego cheese, serrano ham, iberian hot sausage with beans, greek salad and spanish omlette (frittata)....and we definitely had to order the deep fried mini-fishes...food was good...next time we would know to order our own choices of tapas...cause now we know a bit better....

Dessert...yes..cause there is a well-known dessert called creme catalan....similar to creme brulee....so we had to try...and in my opinion, i prefer it to creme brulee...it is less sweet...and even kim who is not a fan of creme brulee at all enjoyed this dessert....very nice...and yes....there was some bubbly....actually cava and sangria to taste....all simply delicious....

And to end of...im gonna tell you about a choc that i tried...a cava choc...what attracted me to it was the shape...shape of a cork...and it was black choc filled with cava...it was ok...i dont think i would run to buy it again...but have a look at the shape....and as you can see i bought it at the same shop as where you can buy the most famous turrons...Vincens

Cava choc

So...that concludes my food blog on Barcelona.....hope you did not get too hungry
