Cube Tasting

Dont worry....it is not an old post being re-posted....it is in fact a new post....hahaha....so because i loved the experience so much last time....we decided to do it again..Thanxs, Liezl for organising again.....this time my parents, Kim, Vanessa and her boyfriend and Liezl's friend would join us....a total of 8.....in hindsight...i think i would not have more than 6 people for an experience like this...8 was just too many....so again...we got the menu sent to us before hand so that we could prepare the wines...who brings what....menu looked exciting....we, our family, were in charge of getting the first three wines and Liezl the last 2.....so....what was the menu....well..let me tell you.....10 courses....wow....and the first course was tapas served on a wooden board...the tapas included carpaccio, tomato mousse with squid and dukkah spices....a tzatziki bubble yoghurt and a tripple cooked potato wedge with a mayonnaise.....the tzatziki bubble was divine....the squid and tomato mousse was ok, wedge was ok and the carpaccio was divine...but presentation was amazing...and this actually was the case for the entire menu....amazing presentation, the waiters kept re-filling wines...and water...it was really great service....and again, like last time, one of the three chefs would explain each course at YOUR table....so nice...and you could ask all the questions you wanted...just wow....here is a pic....oh before i forget....the first course was served with bubbly....we had a Graham Beck...and yes...there was some olive caviar

1st course

The next course....encore served with bubbly was a grilled scallop with garlic foam and crispy bacon....i loved it...except for the garlic foam...a little strange...but then again..I am a sucker for scallops....so yes...good...presented on a piece of slate.....comments were mixed around the table...most people were not too keen on this dish.....

2nd course

Time for a palate cleanser.....a clemintine sorbet with a curry "jelly-type" thing.....loved the presentation...in a small glass jar....very interesting texture and flavour combination....i liked it.....

3rd course

Next up.....a wooded chenic blanc....not easy to find...Kim and i went to a couple of places before a final success at the wine shop at Riverside shopping centre....owner was great and advised us really well...telling us which ones were lightly wooded...which ones a lot...great....and this was served with a dish of crispy pork belly with some white fish, brusselsprout, ravioli and pickled onions..loved the pork belly...and i am not a big fan...but it was cooked really well....ravioli was ok, brusselsprout was very nice, white fish was good....pickled onions i really disliked...they were way too sour...didnt compliment the dish at all, in my opinion.....

4th course

Next up was the Riesling.....served with a smoked duck.....the duck was amazing...it actually was smoked to the extend that it tasted like gammon....i loved it.....loved this course...amazing....so far....my best.....it wAs served with a pea and wasabi puree and a soft egg....the egg yellow just oozing out...amazing...unfortunately i could not taste the wasabi...but nevertheless.....what a great dish.....

5th couse

Then next was the venison, cooked to perfection, complimented with a redwine reduction, beetroots and a ball of goat cheese which i passed onto Kim cause i do not like goat cheese.....all in all this was yummie...the vension was in fact springbok...it was just divine...another hit.....this was served with a Shyra.....

6th course

Next up...the start of the desserts.....first a poached pear, ginger jelly, honeycomb dust, amaretto cubes and vanilla ice cream...this was nice....actually everyone at the table enjoyed this course..interesting was that the pear was dried and not soft....but it was nice.....

7th course

Next up...."savoury choc".... Truffle infused white choc mousse with tobacco smoked black choc and a brown choc mousse....this i liked.....but i am bias...i am a chocolate lover...although i have to admit...i am not so sure about the white truffle mousse...that was a little bit too much truffle...the general comments at the table...they did not like it at all..In fact only Liezl and i ate that dessert and i ended up eating kim and my mom's...so definitely not a hit...oh yes....by the way....we are on the dessert wine now......

8th course

Then came a great dessert.....a decomposed lemon cheese cake....there was a dollop of lemon curde....there was the biscuit....there was the philadelphia cheese lemon filling....it was truely divine...and that was also the general atmosphere around the table...great stuff.....

9th course

Last but not least a selection of sweets....some lemon gooyey biscuits (they are the half moons on the pic), my favourite, turkish delight, nougat and some ginger jelly....nice...but not wow....a little disappointing for the last course....should, in my opinion, have been more of a bang.....

10th course

Verdict overall....i loved it...i would def go again...yes...not next week or next month...i would give it a 3 months break....but then again this is what they do....they have this menu for June and July....so def have some time....it costs R550 and i think that is reasonable given the molecular gastronomy aspect as well as all the efforts of all the different elements in all the different dishes....great stuff....but please...no more than 6 people for sure....go and give it a try...its an awesome and experience....
