Piccolo Mondo Food & Wine pairing

So....i tend to get this email everytime Piccolo Mondo has a Food & Wine pairing....i have never been...but this time the wine estate was Neethlingshof and the food looked really good....so why not give it a shot...and the price....R375 per person including everything...i dont think one can complain...but lets see after the dinner...then i can say whether it was worth it.....here is the menu....

As we arrived we got a nice brandy cocktail, they make the brandy on their farm and canapes were served.....and that stage, we were not seated yet...the canapes were crostini with smoked springbok, crostini with smoked salmon and crostini with camembert...excellent....bread could have been a little crispier though.....then it was time to be seated.....it was great cause the four of us were at a table and we didnt share with anyone else.....here a pic of Kim and me with our brandy cocktails....

Then the host, Piccolo Mondo restaurant manager, introduced the wine makers...they explained the first wine...Sauvignon Blanc and then the chef explained the first course.....it was deep fried monk fish with cauliflower purree...i enjoyed that..fish crispy and the wine paired well with it....so far so good....and you know the amazing part...you got a full glass of wine and when you finsihed it, they came and poored more.....wow....that i thought was extra generous...refill a glass when it is empty....

Next course was paired with a Gewuertzwein which means translated spicewine...it was with a chicken roulade with roasted peppers and chickpeas...not my best dish...nothing stood out...good but nothing special..the wine however, i really enjoyed.....interesting and nice....

Then it was a palate cleanser of lemon yoghurt sorbet.....that was tasty and i enjoyed it...interesting....sorbet with yoghurt....here a pic....

Next course....was main course....it was smoked ostrich with a mushroom and ostrich mince springroll...good but in my opinion the ostrich was a little tough to cut and a little overcooked....but good...wine....was not my favourite...little bit too woody and smokey for my taste....

Then next course...the cheese course....stilton mousse with a Pinotage....and it was good...a little small...but very good...but then again...im very bias....why...cause i love cheese....the wine i also enjoyed...so a good course.....here a pic....

Last course...pear tarte tatin with cinnamon ice cream and dessert wine....dessert...i was disappointed...the pastry was unateable....couldnt even cut it..pity cause that means it was not cooked long enough...the pear was great and the ice cream also...so real pity...dessert wine fab...of course sweet..but really good...so all in all verdict....i def would do it again...wine tasting very generous...food not over the top wow...but def nice...and price....wow....they even did a a few lucky draws and my mom actually won a bottle of pinotage....so a great evening...and as mentioned....i would do it again....last pic....dessert....

So cheerio.......
