Arrecife....part two

So...as promised....im gonna write part two on arrecife....like i explained it is a volcanic island and i have seen the national park already..so this time..time to see something else...this cruise kim decided to join me...we also took my friend Elena with us...and rented a Fiat 500 convertible....what a cool car....so much fun...and actually a hell of a lot more space than any of us had expected....i had told kim a little what i wanted to do...and of course he researched it all...found routes to drive and man....i was so excited.....i would finish nightshift...sleep a couple of hrs and then go off as we arrived....12:00....

We would be going up north....first stop Jameos del Agua....Jameos Del Agua, located in the north of Lanzarote, is part of the Atlantida volcanic cave system formed by the eruptions of the Corona volcano about three to four thousand years ago. The word 'Jameo' refers to a volcanic cave with a collapsed roof, of which there are many in this part of Lanzarote.

After that is was time to see what i really wanted to see cueva de los verdes...it was a guided tour through the caves...and it was amazing...just so wow...the guide explained a little about the history...and i really enjoyed it...there was even an amazing surprise...but we were told we are not allowed to write or tell people because it would spoil their experience when they go there and i would actually agree.....but ill share some pics with you....and some history...The Cueva de los Verdes or Green Caves are part of the Atlantida underground Cave system formed some 3000 years ago during the eruptions of the Corona Volcano (in the north of Lanzarote). The original inhabitants, often referred to as the Guanches, and later the Hispanic population, would shelter here from Pirates that once tormented the Island. The tunnel is over 6 km long with an additional 1.6 km under the sea and is one of the longest Volcanic Tunnels in the World (the underwater section has not been fully explored), although only about 2 km are open to the public. The cave measures more than 15 meters wide and 15 m high. The Caves are not named after the colour Green, but rather a family whose surname was Verde (Green), although the Caves are indeed colourful, especially since they have been carefully and thoughtfully artificially lit for the public. The caves are definitely worth a visit and if the molten wax-like rock isn't enough to impress you, the secret of Cueva de los Verdes will be......

Breath-taking....just wow...after that it was a short ride to Mirador del Rio....a view point....and again...really beautiful....this island is just something else...being of volcano origin, all soil black...it has truely beautiful spots...and is just so different...even that they make their own wine...just amazes me....

After that...we decided we needed something to eat...something typical.....but not before we made a quick stop at a wine and food stop where we could taste some local liquors, wine and pestos.....it was delicious...although...i must say...the wine is not quite my taste...but then again...we are very spoilt with south african wines.....so yes...i am a little bit fussy....

The little wine and pesto tasting we discovered

Food....well...not so easy to find a restaurant....so the nearest one we found...we parked....and just went inside...and sadly...the food was not great...was ok....we tried some typical dishes...of course the papas arrugadas with mojo (wrinkled potatoes cooked in sea water served with a garlic and herb mayo or paprika mayo) and the prawns in garlic sauce.....and some small fishes...which in my opinion were terrible...too small and no batter around them....Elena and i ate them in Arrecife itself....and it was far more delicious....elena had some fish

Kim and my lunch (1st course)

Yes...i was a little disappointed about the food...especially cause i compared it to what Elena and i had in Arrecife (ill share a few pics at the end of the blog)....after that time to take Elena back cause she started work at 17:00....kim and me dropped her off...and of course a visit to Arrecife would not be complete without a stop at Ikea....buy some Swedish goodies...and of course have a hot dog with crispy onion...

Second course...hot dogs at Ikea
Shopping at Ikea and Liddle...yes....parma ham...cheese...gherkins...cracker bread...reindeer salami...sill....yummie things

What an amazing day...loved every bit of it...truely special...and it is just wonderful to get to travel and to see so many places..travel and food...two big passions in my life....amazing what i have been able to see and discover...ship life has been very different...and for me...not always like reality...but it has been good...and i have been enjoying it...i have met special people, seen amazing places...and yes...i also met kim there....ok...enough now...let me stop with this sentimental writing...and let me share what i promised...some last pics of Arrecife....it was when Elena and i decided to take a trip into town (had to take the passenger bus cause it is far to walk) and we wondered around a little and then found a quaint little place outside where we could enjoy some wine and also some typical food....

The town Arrecife...is a disappointment...and if you only see that you probably would say...i dont like this island..why do people come here on holiday...it is only when you venture outside...you discover the true beauty of Lanzarote....it is a small island...and you proobably could discover it in a week...but it is a beautiful place to see....i definitely recommend it....enough said or better said...written...off i go now..and hopefully soon you will see my next blog...cheers from me....for now.....
